Climate Simulations for 1951–2050 with a Coupled Atmosphere–Ocean Model

چکیده
The authors simulate climate change for 1951–2050 using the GISS SI2000 atmospheric model coupled to HYCOM, a quasi-isopycnal ocean model (‘‘ocean E’’), and contrast the results with those obtained using the same atmosphere coupled to a passive Q-flux ocean model (‘‘ocean B’’) and the same atmosphere driven by observed SST (‘‘ocean A’’). All of the models give reasonable agreement with observed global temperature change during 1951–2000, but the quasi-isopycnal ocean E mixes heat more deeply and hence sequesters heat more effectively on the century timescale. Global surface warming in the next 50 yr is only 0.38–0.48C with this ocean in simulations driven by an ‘‘alternative scenario’’ climate forcing (1.1 W m22 in the next 50 yr), only half as much as with ocean B. From the different models the authors estimate that the earth was out of radiation balance by about 0.18 W m22 in 1951 and is now out of balance by about 0.75 W m22. This energy imbalance, or residual climate forcing, a consequence of deep ocean mixing of heat anomalies and the history of climate forcings, is a crucial measure of the state of the climate system that should be precisely monitored with full-ocean temperature measurements.

According to studies and research of Hadley Climate Prediction Center, in the 21st century, pervasive and severe drought, will be threatened the lives of millions of people around the world because of global warming. Forasmuch as the drought affects different sectors of society, therefore, monitoring and evaluation of this phenomenon in the future to proper planning is essential. To this end, t...

Climate changes caused by global warming has presented challenges to human society. Studying the Changes of climate variables in the future decades by using output data’s of Atmosphere-Ocean Global Circulation Models (AOGCM) is a way of perusing climate fluctuation in a region. In this study, the focus is on the AOGCM proceeds in simulating of variable temperature in Ahwaz and Abadan stations. ...
متن کاملResolution, physics and atmosphere–ocean interaction – How do they influence climate model representation of Euro-Atlantic atmospheric blocking?
Atmospheric blocking events are known to locally explain a large part of climate variability. However, despite their relevance, many current climate models still struggle to represent the observed blocking statistics. In this study, simulations of the global climate model EC-Earth are analysed with respect to atmospheric blocking. Seventeen simulations map the uncertainty space defined by the t...

This study focuses on the assessment of the spatiotemporal structure of ENSO variability and its winter climate teleconnections to North America in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) simulations of twentieth-century climate. The 1950–99 period simulations of six IPCC models are analyzed in an effort to benchmark models in the simulation of this...
متن کاملInfluence of Ocean and Atmosphere Components on Simulated Climate Sensitivities
We examine the influence of alternative ocean and atmosphere subcomponents on climate model simulation of transient sensitivities by comparing three GFDL climate models used for the CMIP5. The base model ESM2M is closely related to GFDL’s CMIP3 climate model CM2.1, and makes use of a depth coordinate ocean component. The second model, ESM2G, is identical to ESM2M but makes use of an isopycnal c...
